Hi, Ficus here!
My name is derived from my full name, Ficus Microcarpa Moclame. I am a Ficus with a lot of round, shiny leaves, which makes me a very popular houseplant. I will amaze you with my rapid growth.
Originally I come from China and Malaysia, where I can become Mossive in nature (see what I did there?)! I can also grow big at home, given the right conditions. People used to use my juices to make rubber. Nowadays, I am no longer needed in the field, so I make homes and people happy with my presence.
I like a few rays of sunshine, but not all day. Feel free to place me in front of an east or west facing window, or keep me a few metres away from a south facing window. Be careful with open windows and doors as I don’t like draft winds.
I like a regular sip of lukewarm water! My soil should be kept slightly moist, but certainly not too wet. Before watering me, always check if I am thirsty or not. You can check by lifting me up. Am I heavy? Skip the watering. Am I light? Give me a sip. You can also stick your finger in my soil. Finger comes out with soil sticking to it? I don’t need water just yet. Finger comes out dry? Then I’d like some water. I also prefer to be watered from the bottom, by putting water in my saucer. This way, I can drink how much I need. After 15 minutes I am done drinking and you can use the remaining water to water other plants.
Please fertilize me once a month during growing season, which runs from March to September. This is the period I grow the most. Only give me the recommended amount that is stated on the packaging, don’t overfertilize! Outside of the growing season, I don’t need any fertilizer.
You can leave me in my original pot for the first few months after you’ve brought me home. This way, I can get used to my new home. After I’ve adjusted to my new home, you can give me an a least 20% larger pot with new potting soil, every 2 years. Then I can continue to grow in fresh, nutritious soil. I prefer to get a new pot in spring, but in the meantime, check whether my roots grow through the bottom of the pot. If this is the case, I might need a new pot sooner!
It is very important to plant me in an inner pot first before putting me in a decorative pot. Thus, you can check if you’ve overwatered me by checking if there is water on the bottom of the decorative pot. You can also easily water me from the bottom.
If you spy some old leaves, you can gently shake me to get them to fall off. Generally, you don’t need to trim me. Are my branches getting too long? Then you can, of course, cut them. By cutting the longer branches off, you also promote new and bushier growth.
Just like my brothers and sisters at Plantanious, I am a star at purifying the air! I have many leaves that can convert the CO2 in the air into oxygen. This way you breathe in healthy, purified air which has a positive effect on your concentration, mood and health!
I can make aerial roots that fall down and, when they hit the ground, turn into wood! That way I can become a huge tree! My trunk will be strengthened by the roots so I can continue to grow.
No, I am not edible.

Where should you place me?
Put me in a bright spot in the house, where I won't be bothered by any draughts.

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
