Hi, I am
Hi, my name is Gerbera!
I am the Patio Gerbera and the big sister of Julia. You might know me as the cut flowers in bouquets. I am also a very popular garden plant because of my simple, but beautiful flowers. I have an incredibly long flowering period, namely from April to November! You are guaranteed to be provided with my colorful company for a long time.
Where am I not from, you might better ask! You can find me naturally in South Africa, Asia, South America and Tasmania, where I am a sun-loving flower. Nowadays, I can be found in abundance in the Netherlands, both as a cut flower and as a plant.
My exuberant flowers have a bright and sunny look, and I need that too! I love the sun, it makes my flowers look their best. Just make sure I am not in the bright afternoon sun, as this can damage my flowers and leaves. Of course I look very nice in a pot, but you can certainly put me in the open ground as well!
Unfortunately, I am not winter hardy! But if you planted me in a pot, you can let me hibernate in the garage, for example. Bring me inside when it gets colder than 10 degrees Celsius, to protect me from the worst of the cold. When the temperatures rise again and it is no longer freezing you can put me outside again. Usually this is from April onwards.
I am a big drinker! Therefore, give me water regularly during the flowering season from April to September and make sure that my soil is always moist! Am I planted in a pot? Then make sure that my pot has holes at the bottom, so excess water can drain away and does not sit at the bottom of the pot. This is very important! During the winter I need less water.
Fertilizer, I definitely need that to keep growing such beautiful flowers! Give me the right amount of fertilizer that is mentioned on the package every week, and you will see me grow. I like fertilizer during the blooming season, which runs from April to September. Outside of the blooming season, you do not need to give me any fertilizer.
Am I planted in a pot? Give me a new pot every year, at least 20% larger than the current one. If you give me a new pot, also give me a new load of humus-rich potting soil to grow bigger. Repot me in spring, so I can get used to my new surroundings and start blooming optimally for you when the time is right.
It is necessary to remove my spent flowers with stems so that my new flowers have room to grow. In the spring you can remove the dead plant parts.
You can also put me in a vase as a cut flower. So you can enjoy me indoors and outdoors!
No, I am not edible.

Where should you place me?
Sun, wonderful! Put me in a light and sheltered spot, but be careful with the intense midday sun.
What do I like?
I drink a lot, so water me very regularly! I also need some fertilizer every week to grow. Outside the flowering season, I do not need this.
Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
