Hi, I am
Hi, I am HibisQs
I am also called the Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis, but people sometimes give me the name Althea bush or Chinese rose. I am known for my enchanting flowers with the most beautiful colours , which will make a party of the garden until deep into October. After that, you can put me in the living room.
From my introduction you can probably tell that I am native to a very large part of Asia. I may be a dazzling sight, but I do occur here in large numbers. In the wild I can grow very tall, up to 4 meters! I am also often used as a partition, and therefore often grow as a flower hedge. Breathtaking, if I do say so myself.
I love the sun! Please give me a nice spot in the sun where I am sheltered from the wind. Be careful with the bright afternoon sun! It can be too bright for my flowers. You can plant me in the open ground or in a pot, it is up to you.
Are you putting me in the living room? Then choose a nice sunny spot in the window frame.
The HibisQs is an indoor and outdoor plant.
Unfortunately, I am not hardy. So if you have me in full soil, I probably won't survive the winter. Do you have me in a pot? Lucky you! Then you can put me in the living room because I can also stand inside :)
In the winter period, I give fewer flowers.
I am a big drinker, which is why it is important to always keep my pot ball moist and water me regularly. Am I standing in a pot outside? Then it is very important that I am in a pot with holes at the bottom of the pot so that excess water can drain away properly.
If I am indoors in the living room, you can put me in a pot without holes in the bottom. Just be careful not to water me too much at once.
I like to get plant food once a month. Give this in the recommended amount given on the packaging.
Every year I need a new, at least 20% larger pot. When you repot me, give me new, humus-rich potting soil. That way I have a fresh start with lots of nutrients! Preferably do this in spring when I have enough energy, so I can recover quickly from my move.
My beautiful flowers bloom for 3-4 days and after this they are finished blooming, and it is then important to remove them. This will make room again for my new flowers. I also like to be pruned back in the spring to promote my growth.
I am the national flower of Malaysia. How cool is that!
No, I am not edible.

Where should you place me?
To show off my beautiful flowers, I need some sunlight! Put me in a light, sheltered spot. Be careful with the intense midday sun.
What do I like?
I like to be watered regularly, as I can be quite a drinker. I also like to be given some fertilizer twice a month. Outside the flowering season, I need less water and no fertilizer.
Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
