Hi, I am
Hi, I'm Caesar!
You may also know me as the Banana Plant or Musa Basjoo. I am also sometimes called the Fiber Banana. I am the winter hardy Banana Plant and bring tropical vibes to your garden!
Originally I come from far away, from China and Japan! Here I am known for my medicinal properties. I also live up to my name, Fiber Banana. They use my fibers to make fabrics and I am also used for binding books. In your garden I like to be beautiful, I am also quite good at that. I am very versatile, that's for sure!
I am a real tropical sun worshipper. So feel free to put me in a sunny spot in the garden! A semi-sunny spot is also fine for me. Put me in a spot without heavy wind, I feel most comfortable here. You can plant me in full soil, but I can also survive well in a nice spacious pot.
I am definitely winter hardy! It may seem in winter that I won't survive this, as my mother plant often dies down to the ground. In spring, however, you will see that I prove otherwise, as small shoots will shoot out of the ground! Also, if you have me in a pot, you can let me hibernate in an indoor space. That way the mother plant will not die off and I will only come back bigger next year! Colder temperatures below -10 degrees Celcius? Then it is advised to protect me from the cold.
I am often very thirsty! A large part of my giant leaves consists of water, which makes it important for me to keep drinking well. Therefore, water me regularly during the growing season, which is from April to September. You may keep my soil well moist. Am I standing in a pot? Then make sure there are holes in the bottom of the pot so that excess water can always drain away properly. This is very important! In the winter I need less water.
I only need fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season. Start feeding in April, and stop after July. I like to have some fertilizer twice a month. Stick to the recommended amount indicated on the packaging. Never give too much fertilizer, as my roots don't like this. Outside of this period, I don't need fertilizer.
I really like getting a new pot every year which is 20% bigger than the previous pot. That way I have enough room to continue growing. Repot me preferably in spring, then I have enough energy to recover quickly from my move. Also give me some new potting soil when you repot me, I like that!
Don't be alarmed if my leaves die as it gets colder, this is part of my lifecycle! You can cut these off close to the stem so all the energy can go to surviving. In the spring you will see that I will start to grow abundantly again.
Next to my mother plant, small Banana plants will start growing if I am having a good time. These, if they also have a good time, will become just like me! You can leave these cuttings, or remove them from my mother plant to let them grow into a new Banana plant. Mind you, leaving the cuttings will cost me a lot of energy, and my mother plant will probably not grow as fast.
No, I am not edible.

Where should you place me?
I love the sun, so put me in a sunny spot out of the wind. This is where I prefer to be!
What do I like?
My beautiful leaves consist of a large part of water, and therefore it is really important for me to drink a lot! Therefore, water me regularly and give me some fertilizer every other week. Outside the flowering season, I need less water and no fertilizer.
Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
